    Explain four main characteristics of the northern plains of India.

    Answer:

     (a) Northern plains have been formed by the three major river systems - the Indus, the Ganga and the Brahmaputra and their tributaries.
    (b) It is the most fertile plain in the world, spread over an area of7 lakh sq. km. It is most densely populated region.
    Northern plains contain rich alluvial soil cover. It has adequate water supply and favourable climate for crop cultivation and is the granary of India.
    (c) These plains have many riverine features - alluvial fans, flood plains, levees, bars, buffs and ox-bow lakes. Rivers have deposited loads of mud and silt in their channels. Many ancient and large cities are located in these plains.
