    (a) They are lofty mountains and extend from Indus to Brahmaputra. They form an arc between these two extremes covering a distance of 2,500 km. (b) They have highest peaks in the world. They have an average altitude of 6000 metres. Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world is 8848 metres. (c) They are made of sedimentary rocks and are called young fold mountains. (d) They are snow covered and contain many glaciers, e.g., Siachin, Gangotri etc. (a) They are low hills and are made of igneous and metamorphic rocks. (b) These hills are the oldest structure of the sub-continent. They have been subjected to erosion and are also known as relict mountains.  (c) They are not snow covered and do not contain glaciers. (d) They have an average height of about 900-1100 metres. They have different names Sahyadri, Nilgiri, Anai Malai etc. The highest peak is Anai Mudi at 2695 metres.
