    Discuss the characteristics and importance of three parallel ranges of the Himalayas.

    Characteristics of three Himalayan Ranges are:
    (a) Himadri is the northern most range. I! is the loftiest of all. All high peaks belong to this range--Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga, Nanga Parbat etc. It is mostly covered with snow. I! has average altitude of 6000 metres.
    (b) Himachal ranges have an average altitude of 3700 to 4500 metres. Pir PanjaJ and Dhola Dhar ranges belong to Himachal. It is important as it has also beautiful hill stations-Srinagar, Simla, Mussoorie etc. and valleys-Kashmir, Kangra, Kulu. It also contains Coniferous forests, wildlife and fruit orchards.
    (c) Shiwatik is the southernmost range. It is made of unconsolidated river deposits and is prone to landslides, earthquakes and soil erosion. It has an average altitude of 900 to 1100 metres.
