    Name the three river systems of the Northern plains. Mention three important characteristics of the Northern plains.

    Answer:

               
    The three river systems are;
    (a) Indus and its tributaries. Satluj, Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi and Beas.
    (b) Ganga and its northern tributaries-Yamuna, Gomti, Kosi and Ghagra etc. with its southern  tributaries-Charnbal, Sind, Betwa and Ken etc.
    (c) Brahmaputra in the east.
    Characteristics of northern plains;
    (a) The northern plains are almost level with level variation in relief. The gradient is hardly of 300 m.
    (b) It covers the distance of about 3200 km from Indus to Brahmaputra basins.
    (c) It has rich fertile soil cover. Plains are made up of fine silt and mud (called alluvium) brought down by the rivers.
    (d) These plains are one of the world's most extensive and fertile plains. It has favourable climate and adequale water supply to support agriculture on large scale.
