    Northern Plains  Coastal Plains
    (a) Formed by three main river systems. the Indus, the Ganga and the Brahmputra. (b) Vast undulating alluvial plains formed by river's deposits of alluvium. (c) Northern plains spread over 7 lakh sq. km. They are 2400 km long and 240 km to 320 km broad. (d) Fertile soil and sufficient water supply make the plains agriculturally very productive. (e) They are densely populated. Famous cities and towns-Varanasi. Kanpur. Lucknow, Hardwar Mathura etc. are located in these plains. (f) Northern plains are the granary of India. All types of crops are grown. (g) The northern plains are marked with riverine features. e.g., alluvial fans, flood plains. levees, bars and bluffs. (a) There are two narrow coastal strips along the Arabian Sea in the west and Bay of Bengal in the east. (b) Along the Western Ghats, is a narrow plain. (c) It is divided into three sections. The northern part is called Konkan coast (from Mumbai to Goa). The middle part is known as Kannad plain, the southern part is called Malabar coast. (d) It has many lagoons and estuaries, it has natural harbours, e.g., Mumbai, Goa, Cochin River Tapi and Narmada form estuaries. (e) The Eastern coast is wider, along the Bay of Benga (f) The Northern part is known as Northern Circar and the southern part Coromandel Coast. (g) Lake Chilika and pulicat are twO important lagoons. (h) Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri form fertile deltas.
