(a) The area drained by a single river with its tributaries is known as a river basin, e.g., River Ganga with its tributaries-Yamuna, Gomti, Kosi, Chambal, etc. flows through Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, etc. (b) Any higher ground or an upland which separates two adjoining drainage basins or river basins is known as water-shed or water-divide, e.g., Ambala city is situated on the water-shed between the Indus and the Ganga river systems.
