Read the passage given below and answer the following questions :

Intra Uterine Devices (IUDs) or Intra Uterine Contraceptive Devices (IUCDs) are inserted by doctor or expert nurses in the uterus through vagina. These Intra Uterine Devices are presently available as:

Non-Medicated IUDs : e.g., LippesLoop : It is inert IUD, made of polyethylene impregnated with Barium sulphate or stainless steel.

Copper Releasing IUDs : e.g., CuT, Cu7 and Multiload 375. These have ionized copper which slowly diffuses at the rate of 50 mg/day. It shows local antifertily effect by the following ways :

(i) Phagocytosis of sperms.

(ii) Release of toxic cytokines to suppress sperm motility.

(iii) Inactivate the sperms, thus they are unable to fertilize the ovum.

Hormone Releasing IUDs : e.g., Progestasert, LNG-20 i.e., Levonor-gestrel. These devices releases small quantities of hormones LH, estrogen and progesterone which suppress endometrial changes and cervical mucus and anovulation. The hormone releasing IUDs, in addition, make the uterus unsuitable for implantation and the cervix hostile to the sperms.
