NEET Chemistry Hydrocarbons / हाइड्रोकार्बन Question Bank Question - Assertion and Reason

  • question_answer
Read the assertion and reason carefully to mark the correct option out of the options given below:
Assertion: 2 Bromobutane on reaction with sodium ethoxide in ethanol gives 1 butene as a major product. [AIIMS 2004]
Reason: 1 Butene is more stable than 2 butene.

    A) If both assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of the assertion.

    B) If both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion.

    C) If assertion is true but reason is false.

    D) If the assertion and reason both are false.

    E) If assertion is false but reason is true.

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

[d] 2-bromobutane on reaction with sodium ethoxide in ethanol gives 2-butene as a major product. \[EtOH+\underset{C{{H}_{3}}\,\,}{\mathop{\underset{|}{\mathop{C}}\,H=}}\,CH+B{{r}^{-}}\] This is according to saytzeff?s rule i.e. the Predominant product is the most substituted alkene, i.e. are carrying the largest number of alkyl substituents of hydrogen is eliminated preferentially from the carbon atom joined to the least number of hydrogen atoms. 2-butene is more stable than 1-butene due to presence of large number of hyper conjugating structures in 2-butene.
