What do the terms solstice and equinox mean? Explain with the help of diagrams.

    Answer:

Solstice means standing still. Solstice occurs twice a year, when the tilt of the axis is most inclined towards or away from the Sun, causing the Sun's apparent position in the sky to reach its northernmost or southernmost extreme. Equinox-'Equi' means ?equal? and 'nox' means "nighty hence it is the time when we have night and day of equal length all over the earth. Equinox occurs twice a year, when the earth's axis is neither tilted away from the sun nor towards it and the centre of the Sun is in the same plane as the earth's equator. Autumn Equinox occurs on 23rd September and Spring Equinox on 21st March in the Northern Hemisphere when the Sun's rays fall directly at the equator.
