Solute A is a ternary electrolyte and solute B is non-electrolyte. If 0.1 M solution of solute B produces an osmotic pressure of 2P, then 0.05 M solution of A at the same temperature will produce an osmotic pressure equal to:

    A) P

    B) 1.5P

    C) IP

    D) 3P

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

    [d] For ternary electrolyte, i=3
    \[{{P}_{1}}=iCRT=3\times 0.05\times RT\]
    \[{{P}_{1}}=0.15RT\]                                                                        ...(1)
    For B, (non-electrolyte)
    \[{{P}_{2}}=CRT\]
    \[2P=0.1RT\]                                                                                                          ...(2)
    Diving (1) and (2)
    \[\frac{{{P}_{1}}}{2P}=\frac{0.15}{0.1}\]
    \[\Rightarrow {{P}_{1}}=1.5\times 2P=3P\]
