The ratio in which the line segment joining the points \[(-3,10)\] and \[(6,-8)\] is divided by \[(-1,6)\] is:  (NCERT EXERCISE)

    A) \[2:7\]

    B) \[7:2\]

    C) \[2:5\]

    D) \[5:2\]

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

[a] Let required ratio be \[m:n\]
    \[\therefore \,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,(-1,6)=\left\{ \frac{6m-3n}{m+n},\,\frac{-8m+10n}{m+n} \right\}\]
    On comparing, we get
    \[-1=\frac{6m-3n}{m+n}\]
    \[\Rightarrow \,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,-m-n=6m-3n\]
    \[\Rightarrow \,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,7m=2n\]
    \[\Rightarrow \,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,m:n=2:7\]
