Under British rule, many forests were converted into reserved forests and sanctuaries, forest land was taken over for mining, industries, plantations, and so on. The Adivasis, who were evicted, were not compensated adequately, so they were forced to migrate and take up menial jobs. The process continued even after Independence. Deprived of their means of livelihood and their land, and looked down upon by the dominant community for their different culture, the Adivasis slowly became a marginalised community.
