(a) In 1799, Napoleon Bonaparte became the First Consul and was given immense powers. As First Consul, he introduced a number of reforms. (b) Inflation was checked by a series of financial measures which culminated in the establishment of the Bank of France. (c) He also resolved the persisting dispute with the Papacy which had emerged due to the confiscation of Church lands in 1789. (d) He codified French Law which has remained the basis of the French legal system.
