How women in India still face discrimination and oppression in various ways? Explain with four examples.                                                                                                           [Delhi 2008]

    Answer:

Women in India are discriminated against right from the birth. Different aspects of life in which women are discriminated against or disadvantaged are as follows:
    (i) At Literacy Level: In India, the literacy rate among women is only 54 per cent as compared to 76 per cent among men. This is because women are deprived of an equal access to education as the males in the society.
Even a very small percentage of girls go for higher education and drop-out rate is also higher among the girls.
(ii) At the Economic Level: Women are discriminated against at economic level as well like the ratio of women in highly paid jobs is very less than men. Sometimes women are paid less than men for the same job even when both do exactly the same work. Even if a women work for more number of hours than a man, her work is not given importance.
(iii) Decline in Sex Ratio: There is decline in sex ratio because of preference to male child over the female child. A girl is considered a burden by the parents. This attitude of Indian society has resulted in social crimes such as female faeticide and female foeticides. Hence, the sex ratio of India has declined, the present average ratio is 927 females per thousand males.
(iv) High Crime Bate Against Women. Nowadays the crime against women has gone up. Women are exploited and harassed at the workplace and at home. There are cases of harassment, exploitation in the urban areas as well. They are sexually assaulted at homes.
