             Briefly describe the main economic activities in the Veld region of Southern Africa?

    Answer:

    There are various economic activities carried on in the region of the Veld of South Africa - Cattle and sheep rearing, dairy farming, farming of various crops gold, diamond mining and industries like the iron and steel. The Velds are best suited for cattle and sheep rearing. Merino sheep are bred for their wool and after Australia, South Africa is the second largest exporter of Merino wool. The Angora goats are also bred here for their fleece-Mohair and South Africa is the largest producer of Mohair in the world. Dairy farming is another important occupation here. Cattle are reared in those areas of the Velds which are wetter and warmer. Dairy products such as butter and cheese are produced for local use as well as for the international market. Frozen meat is exported mainly to the South European countries. The crops farmed are maize, wheat, barley, oats and potatoes. As the Velds are rich in minerals, mining is an important activity in the hill range of Witwatersrand and diamonds is the mines of Kimberly. The availability of coal and iron ore near Johannesburg, has led to the development of iron and steel industries around Pretoria.
