Mention any two advantages of the structures like tunnels, canals and bridges that facilitate transport.

    Answer:

    (i) Tunnels-(a) Tunnels help to make movement or transportation easier by providing a direct route in the mountainous regions and making journeys easier and shorter. (b) Tunnels under the sea like the channel connecting England to Europe overlook the water barrier. (ii) Canals- (a) Canals are the especially constructed channels for free movement of inland as well as open sea vessels. (b) Canals are constructed at a place where the natural water is not navigable e.g. the St. Lawrence Seaway (canal links all the five great lakes to the St. Lawrence River which flows into the Atlantic ocean). (iii) Bridges- (a) Bridges are constructed over water bodies to overcome water barriers; and (b) To shorten travelling distances caused by such barriers. The Hangzhou BayBridge in China is the world's longest cross-sea bridge in the world. It is 35.6 kms long with a six-lane highway in both directions connecting Shanghai with Ningbo.
