Explain the four different techniques adopted by the people of ancient India to harvest rainwater, floodwater, groundwater and river water.

    Answer:

In ancient times people had detailed knowledge about the rainfall regimes and soil types and developed many techniques to harvest rainwater, groundwater, floodwater and river water keeping in mind the needs of the people and local ecological conditions. In hilly and mountainous regions diversion channels called 'kuls' or 'guls' were built for agriculture in western Himalayas. In Rajasthan rooftop rainwater harvesting is done. While in the flood plains of west Bengal inundation channels are built to irrigate the fields. In arid and semi-arid regions agricultural lands are converted into rain fed storage reservoirs which are called as Khadins in Jaisalmer and Johads in other parts of Rajasthan.
