    (a) Name the person who gave this, statement.
    (b) Do you agree with this statement? Support your views with two arguments.
    [Foreign 2008]

    Answer:

    (a) This statement was made by Sir Muhammad Iqbal in 1930. He was the (then) president of the Muslim League.
    (b) His first argument that communalism is indispensable to formation of a harmonious whole in India can-not be justified because communalism is always a divisive force. For harmonious living people should adapt to each-others needs and aspirations keeping the interest of the nation in mind rather than using religion in politics and creating discord.
His second statement that the principle of European democracy can-not be applied is probably understandable - each country has its own needs and problems, Government of each country must be responsive to those needs rather than adopting European model. His third argument that the creation of a Muslim state is justified given by Iqbal in the capacity of the President of Muslim League. He represented their demand. However or Indian leadership it was unacceptable.
