ASSERTION: Iron is not a magnet.
    REASON: Iron is diamagnetic substance.

    A) If both assertion and reason are true and reason is the correct explanation of assertion.

    B) If both assertion and reason are true and reason is not the correct explanation of assertion.

    C) If assertion is true but reason is false.

    D) If both assertion and reason are false.

    E) If assertion is false but reason is true.

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Iron is a ferromagnetic material. But in iron, the atomic magnetic dipoles are randomly oriented in the form of small domains, such that the net magnetic moment of the specimen is zero. It becomes magnet only on applying external magnetic field. When external field is applied, the magnetic dipoles align along the direction of the field and the specimen becomes magnet as it now possesses non zero magnetic moment.
