In a container, water and milk are mixed in the ratio 5 : 3. If 16 litres of mixture are removed and same quantity of milk be added then the ratio becomes 3 : 5. What is the volume of the container?

    A) 40

    B)               50

    C) 60

    D)               70

    E) None of these

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

    Explanation Let the quantity of water be 5x litre and quantity of milk be 3x litre in the container. Removed quantity contains, \[\frac{16}{8} \times  5 = 10\] litre water and \[\left( 16-10 \right)\] litre = 6 litre of milk. Now, \[\frac{5x-10}{(3x-6)+16}=\frac{3}{5}\] \[\Rightarrow \,\,5\left( 5x-10 \right)= 3\left( 3x+10 \right)\,\,\Rightarrow \,\,25x-50=9x+30\]\[\Rightarrow \,\,\,25x-9x=30+50\,\,\Rightarrow \,\,16x=80\,\,\Rightarrow \,\,x=5\] Thus, the volume of container is \[8 \times  5 = 40 litre.\]
