      16.          How are the farmers in village Palampur able to grow more crops from the same land? Explain in five points.         Or How can one grow more than one crop on the same piece of land? Explain.

    Answer:

The farmers of Palampur are not following good agricultural practices, because the soil will lose its fertility after some years, reducing the yield drastically. The farmers are violating the principle of sustainable development i.e., they are exploiting resources without thinking about the future. They can rectify this problem by using the 'multiple cropping' method, in which a third crop of a vegetable/fruit is grown in between the cereals grown in the kharif and rabi seasons. This third crop brings back the nutrients in the soil lost due to use of chemical fertilizers while growing cereals. To counter the reduction in water table, they should employ rainwater harvesting methods during the monsoons similar to those followed in other arid regions.
