Explain the different methods to increase production from the same area of land, giving some concrete examples.

    Answer:

The following methods can be used (i) Multiple cropping, which means to grow more than one crop on a piece of land over one year. (ii) Adopting modern farming methods involving use of High Yielding Variety (HYV) of seeds, irrigation, chemical fertilisers and pesticides to produce maximum output from the same piece of land. HYV seeds produce much greater amounts of grain on a single plant than the traditional varieties. As a result, far larger quantities of food grains can be produced from the same piece of land. (iii) Inter cropping, which is the practice of producing multiple crops in a given space. Multiple crops are grown in narrow, adjacent strips, which allow interaction between the different species, and also allows management with modern equipment.
