Give the reasons for selecting longitude 82°30' as the Standard Meridian of India.

    Answer:

The latitudinal and longitudinal extent of the Indian main land is about 30°. Thus, from Gujarat to Arunachal Pradesh, there is a time difference of almost two hours. So the local time along the Standard Meridian of India (82°30' E) passing through Mirzapur (in Uttar Pradesh) is taken as the Indian Standard Time for the whole country. This is near to the centre of the country and also an exact multiple of a half hour related to Greenwich in England, which is at 0° longitude.
