State the role of nitrogen fixing bacteria in the biosphere.

    Answer:

Nitrogen is the most abundant component of air, but it cannot be utilised by majority of organisms in its elemental form. It needs to be converted into nitrates for the use of plants. This conversion can be done by some nitrogen fixing bacteria such as Azotobacter (occurs freely in soil) and Rhizobium (occurs in root nodules of leguminous plant). Thus, nitrogen fixing bacteria plays major role in nitrogen fixation.
