The temperature-time graph given below shows the heating curve for pure wax. From the graph answer the following. (i) What is the physical state of the substance at the points A,B,C, and D? (ii) What is the melting point of the substance? (iii) What is its boiling point? (iv) Which portions of the graph indicates that change of state is taking place? (v) Name the terms used for heat absorbed during change of states involved in the above processes.

    Answer:

                      (i) At point A= Solid wax.                            (1/2) At point B = Solid as well as liquid wax. (Melting continues)                                      (1/2) At point C= Liquid wax                                (1/2) At point D = Liquid as well as vapour state (Boiling continues)                                       (1 /2) (ii) Melting point of wax = 15°C              (1 /2)   (iii) Boiling point of wax = 110°C             (1/2)   (iv) Straight lines in the curve parallel to Time-axis (x-axis) indicate the change of state. These portions are to  (Solid to liquid) and  to  (Liquid to vapour state).      (1) (v) During melting, at melting point, the heat absorbed is called latent heat of fusion. During   boiling, at boiling point, the heat absorbed is  called latent heat of vaporisation.     (1/2+1/2)
