      Neelam attended an agriculture festival organised by her school. She herself belong to an agriculture family. There she saw the harmful effects of using pesticides. Next day she saw her father filling the spray tank with pesticides to spray in their field. (i) Can you give some points that would help Neelam to convince his father to stop using pesticides in large quantities? (ii) What is the alternate method? (iii) What values are shown by Neelam?

    Answer:

                      (i) Using pesticides is the most common method used by farmers to eradicate pathogens like bacteria, fungi and viruses that causes disease in crops. Pesticides     includes     herbicides, insecticides and fungicides. These chemicals are sprayed on crop plants or used for treating seeds and soil. However, excessive use of pesticides may be harmful.(1)                          Harmful effects are (a) Pesticides should be used in appropriate quantities large amount can be very problematic. (b) Pesticides are chemicals that cannot be decomposed by microbes or humans. So, when the crops sprayed by pesticides are consumed by us, it get stored in our system and creates problem for us. (c) Pesticides are also poisonous for some plants. This effect the plant growth and plant yield. (d) Pesticides may also cause environmental pollution.                                                  (2) (ii) Alternate Method-Organic Farming Farmers should be encouraged to do organic farming, which is farming systems involving minimal use of chemicals as fertilisers, herbicides, pesticides, etc., and with maximum input of organic manures, recycled farm wastes (straw and livestock excreta).  (1)            Other Features of Organic Farming Bio-agents such as culture of blue-green algae is used in preparation of biofertilisers. Bio-pesticides are made using neem leaves or turmeric specially in grain storage. A healthy cropping system is adopted like intercropping, mixed cropping and crop rotation to ensure good yield. (iii) Values shown by Neelam are environment awareness, careful and attentive.            (1)
