      State some common objective of varietal improvement.

    Answer:

                        The common objectives of varietal improvement are (i) Improved yield An introduction to High Yielding Varieties (HYV) to improve the productivity of economic produce. (ii) Better quality The better quality product are being introduced in market due to competition. Wheat with better baking quality, pulses with high protein quality and preserving quality of fruits and vegetables, etc., are consider better now a days.        (2)                (iii) Biotic and abiotic resistance Various biotic and abiotic factors harm crop. Developed   varieties   which   have resistance against these disease can bring significant   improvement   in   crop production. (iv) Early uniform maturity It makes harvesting process easy and reduces the loss of product during harvesting long duration crops reduce the cost of crops.                      (2) (v) Desirable agronomic trait Desirable traits are tallness high tailoring, profuse branching for fodder crops while darkness, early maturation and high productivity are desirable characters for cereal crops. (vi) Wider adaptability Developing varieties with wider adaptation will help on stabilising the crop production under different environmental condition.                            (1)
