Amit buys few grams of gold at the poles as per the instructions of one of his friends. He hands over the same when he meets him at the equator. Will the friend agree with the weight of gold bought? If not, why?   [NCERT]

    Answer:

Amit's friend does not agree with the weight of gold bought. Reason: The acceleration due to gravity on the surface of the earth is given by                        Since G and M are constants The radius (R) of the earth is not the same everywhere. This is because of the shape of the earth which is not perfectly spherical. It is slightly flattened at the poles and bulges at the equator. Therefore, the value of g on earth is maximum at the poles and minimum at the equator. Thus, the weight of gold will be greater at the poles than at the equator.
