Shashank was quite confused when he was taught mole concept in class. Next day, he went to the market with his father to buy fruits. His father bought one dozen apples, one dozen banana, one dozen oranges and one dozen pears. Fruit-seller gave them fruits according to their masses in kg. On observing their  respective masses, Shashank understood  the mole concept clearly. Read the above passage and answer the following questions. (a)What is mole concept? (b)How many pieces come in one dozen? (c) What made Shashank understand mole concept? (d) What is Avogadro constant? (e) What are the values of Shashank and his father?

    Answer:

          (a) Mass of 1 mole of a substance (atoms, molecules, ions or particles) is equal to its relative atomic or molecular mass in gram.                    (b) 12 pieces                                    (c) Weights of one dozen each of different fruits are different in kg, i.e., 6.022 x102 a toms/ions/ molecules of different elements have different masses in gram and this is equal to one mole of each element. This made Shashank to understand mole concept.                                    (d) In one mole of any substance, the number of particles (atoms/molecules/ions) is fixed, with a value of 6.022 x 1023. This is called the Avogadro constant.                                  (e) Shashank-Curious to know everything, intelligent, scientific and practical.                     Father-Intelligent, scientific, caring and practical.
