      How are detergents classified?

    Answer:

      Detergents are of three types (i) Cationic    (ii) Anionic     (iii) Non-ionic (i) Cationic detergents : Detergents in which large part of molecules is cationic are called cationic detergents. These are quaternary ammonium salts. e.g. Cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (ii) Anionic detergents : Detergents in which large part of the molecule is anion. These are generally sulphonates. e.g. Sodium dodecylbenzene sulphonate. (iii) Non-ionic detergent : Detergents which do not contain any ions. These are generally esters of long chain fatty acids with long chain alcohols. e.g. Ester of polyethlene glycol with stearic acid
