    Answer:

    D and L stand for relative configuration of particular stereoisomer. This refers to their relation with a particular isomer of glyceraldehydes. All those compounds which can be correlated to (+) isomer of glyceraldehydes are said to have D - configuration whereas which are correlated to (-) isomer of glyceraldehyde are said to be L configuration.
