Write short notes on the following : (i) Cannizzaro's reaction (ii) Rosenmund reaction (iii) Wolff kishner reduction (iv) Aldol condensation.

    Answer:

Cannizzaro reaction: Those aldehydes which do not have a-hydrogen undergo self oxidation and reduction in the presence of concentrated alkali to give salt of carboxylic acid and alcohol. (ii) Rosenmund's reduction : Acyi chloride is hydrogenated by palladium and barium sulphate to gives aldehyde. (iii) Wolff Kishner reduction : Carbonyl compounds on treatment with hydrazine give hydrazone which on reaction with KOH and ethylene glycol give alkanes. (iv) AIdol condensation : Aldehydes and ketones having at least one hydrogen undergo a reaction in the presence of dilute alkali as catalyst to form (hydroxy aldehyde, (aldol) or (hydroxy ketones.
