Copper has positive electrode potential hence it cannot be oxidised by H+ ion then how it is oxidised by nitric acid. Or Cu does not dissolve in HCl but dissolves in HNO3. Why?

    Answer:

Copper has positive electrode potential (0.34 V) hence it cannot be oxidised by H+ ion. However Cu is oxidised in nitric acid by nitrate (NO3-) ion not by H+ ion. This is why Cu dissolves in HNO3 but not in HCl.
