                      (a) The means of transportation and communication are called the lifelines of a nation and its economy because (i) An efficient and well developed system of transport is essential for proper utilisation of the available natural resources. (ii) The    means    of   transportation    and communication are the very basis of industry and trade of any nation. (iii) A well developed system of transportation maintains the movement of persons and goods from one to another region of the country. (iv) The means of communication help in sending and receiving messages, thus playing a vital role in the running of the country efficiendy. (b) International trade has undergone major changes during the last 15 years. Exchange of commodities and goods has been augmented and even superseded by exchange of information and knowledge due to developments in the field of telecommunications. India has emerged as a software giant at the international level and is earning a large amount of foreign exchange through the export of information technology products.
