      What are the constitutional provisions to make India a secular state?

    Answer:

                      The makers of the Indian Constitution, chose the model of a secular state for India as they were aware of the challenges. The following constitutional provisions were provided: (i) There is no official religion for the Indian State. Unlike the status of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, Islam in Pakistan, the Indian Constitution does not give any special status to any religion. (ii) The Constitution provides to all individuals and communities, freedom to profess, practice and propagate any religion or not to follow any. (iii) The Constitution prohibits discriminations on grounds of religion. (iv) At the same time, the Constitution allows the state to intervene in matters of religion in order to ensure equality within religious communities. For example, it has banned untouchability.
