Explain why is OH group in phenols more strongly held as compared to OH group in alcohols.

    Answer:

Due to donation of the lone pair of electrons on the oxygen atom to the benzene ring, phenol can be written as a resonance hybrid of five structures, I?V as given on page 11/24. Out of these, structures n, in and IV contain a carbon-oxygen double bond. In other words, carbon-oxygen bond in phenols has some double bond character while in alcohols it is a pure single bond. Therefore, OH group in phenols is more strongly held as compared to OH group in alcohols.
