Given below are the evolutionary stages of horse 1. Eohippus (Dawn horse) – Evolution of horse started with this. This horse was about the size of a fox terrier, only 28 cm high at the shoulders. 2. Mesohippus (Intermediate horse) – Eohippus changed into Mesohippus. This was about goat sized and 60 cm high. 3. Merychippus (Ruminating horse) – Mesohippus changed into Merychippus. This was of the size of an ass, about 100 cm high. 4. Pliohippus – Merychippus was replaced by the Pliohippus, the Pliocene horse. This resembled then modern horse, except in size. 5. Equus – Pliohippus gave rise to Equus, the modern horse. It is about 150 cm high at the shoulders.
