Consider a one-dimensional motion of a particle with total energy E. There are four regions A, B, C and D in which the relation between potential energy V, kinetic energy (K) and total energy E is as given below:                 Region A : V > E                 Region B : V < E                 Region C : K > E                 Region D : V > K                 State with reason in, each case whether a particle can be found in the given region or not.

    Answer:

Total energy, E = K + V                 In region A, V > E means K is negative.                 Since negative K.E. is meaningless, so particle cannot found in region A.                 In region B, V < E, so K.E. is positive.                 Hence, particle can be found in region B.                 In region C, K > E, so V is negative. This is possible and hence particle can be found in region C.                 In region D, V > K, so E has definite positive value and hence particle can be found in region D.
