A trolley of mass 200 kg moves with a uniform speed of 36 km I h on a frictionless track. A child of mass 20 kg runs on the trolley from one end to the other (10 m away) with a speed of  relative to the trolley in a direction opposite to the trolley's motion, and jumps out of the trolley. What is the final speed of the trolley ? How much has the trolley moved from the time the child begins to run ?

    Answer:

The child gives an impulse to the trolley at the start and then runs with a constant relative velocity of  with respect to the trolley's new velocity. Total initial momentum, Let new velocity of the trolley Child's velocity relative to the trolley in opposite direction = 4 ms~1  Child's actual velocity (relative to ground)   Total final momentum, By conservation of linear momentum,                   Time taken by the child to cover length of the trolley   Distance covered by the trolley in 2.5 s .
