The hardships which the girl went through at the time of the-war are contrasted by her thoughts of the current situation. Some hardships during the war were: (i) The bread available was black in colour, showing that it was of poor quality.   (ii) They could not sleep for fear of being attacked by the Germans.   (iii) The view from the window used to be very horrifying, probably showing the atrocities of the occupying troops.
