  • question_answer 1)
What is the effect of: (i) addition of \[{{H}_{2}}\] (ii) addition of \[C{{H}_{3}}OH\] (iii) removal of \[CO\] (iv) removal of \[C{{H}_{3}}OH\] on the equilibrium \[2{{H}_{2}}(g)+CO(g)\rightleftharpoons C{{H}_{3}}OH(g)?\]

    Answer:

    (i) Addition of reactant (\[{{H}_{2}}\]) will shift the equilibrium towards forward direction. (ii) Addition of product (\[C{{H}_{3}}OH\]) will increase the rate of backward reaction, hence the equilibrium will shift in backward direction. (iii) Removal of CO, i.e., decrease in concentration of reactant will also shift the equilibrium in backward direction. (iv) Removal of\[C{{H}_{3}}OH\], i.e., decrease in concentration of product will shift the equilibrium towards forward direction.
