A salt X is formed and a gas is evolved when ethanoic acid reacts with sodium hydrogen carbonate. Name the salt X and the gas evolved. Describe an activity and draw the diagram of the apparatus to prove that the evolved gas is the one which you have named. Also, write the chemical equation of the reaction involved.

    Answer:

When ethanoic acid reacts with sodium hydrogen carbonate, sodium ethanoate is formed. Thus, X is sodium ethanoate and the gas evolved is carbon dioxide . Activity (i)Set up the apparatus as shown.     (ii) Take in a test tube and add 2 mL ethanoic acid. (iii)gas is evolved with brisk effervescence. (iv) Pass the gas through freshly prepared lime water. It will turn milk due to the formation of in soluble calcium carbonate.
