  • question_answer
A thief is stopped by a policeman from a distance of 150 metre. When the policeman starts the chase, the thief also starts running. Assuming the speed of the thief as 7 km / hr and that of policeman as 9 km/hr, how far the thief would have run, before he is over- taken by the policeman?

    A)  420 metre

    B)  630 metre

    C)  315 metre

    D)  525 metre

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

    Relative speed of policeman with respect to thief = (9 - 7) kmph = 2 kmph \[=\left( 2\times \frac{5}{18} \right)\] metre / second \[=\frac{5}{9}\]metre / second \[\therefore \] Time taken in catching the thief \[=\frac{\frac{150}{5}}{9}=\left( \frac{150\times 9}{5} \right)\]seconds = 270 seconds \[\therefore \]Distance covered by thief = speed \[\times \]time \[\text{=speed }\!\!\times\!\!\text{ time}\] \[=\left( \frac{7\times 5}{18}\times 270 \right)\]metre = 525 metre
