    Isobars have ______.

    A)  Same mass numbers but different atomic numbers

    B)  Different mass numbers but same atomic numbers

    C)  Same mass and atomic numbers

    D)  Different mass and atomic numbers

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Isobars are (nuclides) atoms of different chemical elements that have the same number of nucleons. They differ in atomic number (number of protons) but have the same mass number.\[^{40}S,\]\[^{40}Cl,\]\[^{40}Ar,\]\[^{40}K\] and \[{{\,}^{40}}Ca\] are example of a series of isobars. The nuclei of these nuclides all contain 40 nucleons: however, they contain varying numbers of protons and neutrons.
