In an army selection process, the ratio of selected to unselected candidates was 6 : 1. If 30 less had applied and 10 less selected, the ratio of selected to unselected would have been 7 : 1. How many candidates had applied for the process?

    A)  910

    B)  1820

    C)  455

    D)  2730

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

     Case I, Selected candidates \[=6x\] Unselected candidates \[=x\] According to the question, Total candidates \[=7x-30\] Selected candidates \[=6x-10\] \[\therefore \]Unselected candidates \[=(7x-30)-(6x-10)\] \[=7x-30-6x+10\] \[=x-20\] \[\therefore \] \[\frac{6x-10}{x-20}=\frac{7}{1}\] \[\Rightarrow \]\[7x-140=6x-10\] \[\Rightarrow \]\[7x-6x=140-10\] \[\Rightarrow \]\[x=130\] \[\therefore \]Initial number of candidates \[=7x=7\times 130=910\]
