Sulphur Dioxide pollution is indicated by an excessive growth of which of the following?

    A)  Algal Blooms

    B)  Lichens

    C)  Bryophytes

    D)  Both (b) and (c)

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Lichens and bryophytes (moss) are good bio-indicators of Sulphur Dioxide-pollution as they do not like to grow where there is sulphur dioxide in the air. Sulphur dioxide inhibits photosynthesis by disrupting the photosynthetic mechanism. Sulphur dioxide has been the main pollutant responsible for the dramatic-decline in bryophytes and lichens in urban and industrialized areas over the past 100 years. So sulphur dioxide pollution is indicated by the diminished growth of lichens or mosses.
