Tides occur in the oceans and seas due to which among the following?
    1. Gravitational force of the Sun
    2. Gravitational force of the Moon
    3. Centrifugal force of the Earth
Select the correct answer using the codes given below.

    A)  Only 1

    B)  2 and 3

    C)  1 and 3

    D)  All of these

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Exp. [d] The tide-raising forces at the Earth's surface thus result from combination of basic forces. ? The force of gravitation exerted by the Moon upon the Earth. ? Gravitational force of the Sun exerted upon the Earth. ? Centrifugal force of the Earth. The system of Earth and Moon creates a gravity like a rope that pulls two bodies together, and the Centrifugal force is what keep them apart. Because the Centrifugal force is greater than the Moon's gravitational pull, Ocean water on the opposite side of the Earth bulges outward. The Sun's gravity pulls ocean water toward the Sun, but at the same time, the Centrifugal force of the combined Earth-Sun revolution causes water on the opposite side of Earth to bulge away from the Sun. However, the effect is smaller than the Moon, even given the (greater mass of the Sun (greater mass means greater gravitations force\[G\frac{{{m}_{1}}{{m}_{2}}}{{{r}^{2}}}\]) because the Sun is too far away from the Earth than the Moon. Hence, option [d] is correct.
