Biuret test is characteristic of compounds containing the functional group

    A)

    B) \[-N{{H}_{2}}\]

    C) \[-CONH-\]

    D)        \[-C\equiv H\]

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

All compounds containing peptide linkage \[(-CO\cdot NH-)\] give respond to Biuret test. For example, urea and proteins. Biuret test for urea: On heating, urea loses \[N{{H}_{3}}\] and forms solid biuret. This is dissolved in the least amount of water and made alkaline by adding a few drops of sodium hydroxide. The alkaline solution, when treated with \[1-2\] drops of dilute \[CuS{{O}_{4}}\] solution, gives a violet colour. This test is known as Biuret test.
