RAJASTHAN PMT Rajasthan - PMT Solved Paper-2011

  • question_answer
What will be the concentration \[{{H}^{+}}\] ions in \[0.1\,\,M\] acetic acid and \[0.1\,\,M\] sodium acetate solution, if the dissociation constant of acetic acid is\[1.8\times {{10}^{-5}}\]?

    A) \[1.8\times {{10}^{-7}}\]

    B) \[1.8\times {{10}^{-5}}\]

    C) \[1.8\times {{10}^{-2}}\]

    D)        \[1.8\times {{10}^{-3}}\]

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

    \[\because \,\,\,0.1\,\,\,M\]acetic acid and \[0.1\,\,M\] sodium acetate solution is an example of acidic buffer mixture, \[\therefore \]  \[pH=p{{K}_{a}}+\log \frac{[salt]}{[acid]}\] \[\because \]     \[[salt]=[acid]=0.1\,\,M\] \[\therefore \]  \[pH=p{{K}_{a}}\] or \[[{{H}^{+}}]={{K}_{a}}\] (dissociation constant of acetic acid)                 \[=1.8\times {{10}^{-5}}M\]
