  • question_answer
The dissociation constant of two acids \[H{{A}_{1}}\] and \[H{{A}_{2}}\] are \[3.0\times {{10}^{-4}}\] and \[1.8\times {{10}^{-5}}\] respectively. The relative strengths of the acids is:

    A) \[1:16\]

    B) \[1:4\]

    C) \[4:1\]

    D)        \[16:1\]

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

    We know that     \[\frac{strength\,\,of\,\,acid\,\,H{{A}_{1}}}{strength\,\,of\,\,acid\,\,H{{A}_{2}}}=\sqrt{\frac{{{k}_{1}}}{{{k}_{2}}}}\]                                                     \[=\sqrt{\frac{3.0\times {{10}^{-4}}}{1.8\times {{10}^{-5}}}}=\frac{4}{1}\] \[\therefore \]relative strength of acid \[H{{A}_{1}}\] and                                 \[H{{A}_{2}}=4:1\]
